MANITOBA KOREA VETERANS CAIRN

This cairn was dedicated on 13 September 1998 and made possible through the efforts of Manitoba Keystone Unit #17, Korea Veterans Association of Canada. It’s inscribed with the names of those from Manitoba who lost their lives during the Korean War, 1950-53 or in Korea on peacekeeping duties from 1953-1955. On the reverse side of the cairn are the names of seventeen members of the 2nd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery who were killed when their troop train crashed at Canoe River, B.C. while en route to Korea via Seattle, Washington.

Manitoba’s Korean War Cairn is located in Brookside Cemetery, Winnipeg, the largest military cemetery in Canada. The land was donated by the City of Winnipeg. Raising money for the project was handled by a committee headed by Norm Van Tassel assisted by Graham Dixon, Len Johansson, and Michael Nicholson. All levels of government assisted in funding a percentage of the cost.

This uniquely-designed cairn was fabricated and erected by Larsen’s Memorials of Winnipeg and made of Canadian grey granite, matching the individual memorials of Korean War veterans who rest in the Field of Honour, Brookside Cemetery.

As an additional honour to the fallen, the Province of Manitoba named lakes, islands, bays, and other geographical features after those Manitobans whose names appear on the cairn. Special Commemorative Name Certificates were presented to the families during the 1998 dedication ceremonies.
